Shelters and Evacuation

•Be aware of local shelters, but note they fill up quickly during major storms, and not all shelters allow pets. Have a plan if you’re in harm’s way.

Water & Utilities Prep

1.Charge Devices:

Charge all devices that provide light (phones, laptops, cameras, tablets) and external battery backups. Old phones can still dial 911.

Pro Tip: Glow sticks can act as temporary light sources. Stand them upright in a glass to create a lantern effect.

  1. Store Water for Toilets:

Wash trash cans and fill them with water for flushing. Add a little bleach to sterilize. Store them in the garage or next to bathrooms.

  1. Fill Sinks, Tubs & Washing Machines:

Fill every sink and bathtub with water. Cover sinks with Saran Wrap to keep dust out. Fill the washing machine with water as an extra supply.

  1. Freeze Water:

Fill containers and Tupperware with water, and freeze them to help keep food cold longer. These can also act as backup drinking water.

  1. Prepare Drinking Water:

Fill as many cups or bottles as possible with water and store them in the fridge or on the counter. Use these first to avoid opening sealed water bottles.

  1. Propane & Cooking Prep:

Fill your propane tanks. You can use them to heat soup, boil water, and make coffee if the power is out. Consider getting an extra tank.

  1. Reduce A/C & Fridge Temp:

Lower your A/C in advance to keep the house cooler for longer. Drop your fridge and freezer temperatures to help preserve food if the power goes out.

  1. Unplug Electronics:

Unplug all electronics before the storm to protect them from power surges.
